HAIRSPRAY.
SCENE 1
Tracy enters the place singing “Good morning Baltimore” Track 1 (as she
enters school, actors change positions quickly as in Silent Pictures to
show the passing time. Bell rings and she and Penny get together to rush
home to see the show)
(Running from school to TRACY’s house)
TRACY: Hurry up, PENNY, hurry up, the show’s already started! We’re
gonna miss it!
PENNY: I’m hurrying, TRACY, but my mother says I can’t run like a boy.
TRACY: AHHH... Your mother is too strict, you must relax…
PENNY: She says I should be a fine lady….!!
TRACY: (Tracy mocks at her making a FINESSE gesture…) OK LADY….Come on!
PENNY: Ok, ok I’ll go but you mustn’t laugh at me!!
(TRACY and PENNY enter).
TRACY: Hurry up, Penny!! The show must be starting already!!!
(they turn the TV set on and start dancing in front of it)
“The nicest kid in town” Track 2
EDNA: Tracy Turnblad! Will you turn that noise a little down, please?
PENNY: Sorry MrsTurnblad, we love this new dance! It´s called “The
chicken dance”
EDNA: jajajjajaja! The chicken dance?? OH my God! …..(Bell rings and
Edna goes to open the door. Mrs. Pingelton enters and Penny jumps to back of
the coach and hides.
TRACY: Hello, Mrs. Pingelton.
EDNA: And … where is…..? (Tracy makes many movements to stop her mother
talking, but she realizes something is wrong). Tracy Turnblad!! Do you mean
Penny is here without her mum `s permission??
PENNY: (Penny appears from the back of the furniture) Hello Mrs.
Pingelton... I mean... mother…..hi mum!!
WILBUR: Teenagers, Mrs.Pingelton. They love watching that Corny Collins.
PRUDY PINGELTON: I hate that show. It is not serious. It’s not
appropriate for fine ladies, like PENNY. Have you heard PENNY? YOU CAN’T WATCH
IT
WILBUR: It’s just
music.
EDNA: It doesn’t do any harm. At least they are smiling.!!!!!
PRUDY: Penny, stop dancing like that!! We are going home!!.
PENNY: Oh, No !! … Please mum. I want to watch it.
TRACY: Yes, yes, please stay with me.
PRUDY: No. PENNY… let’s go: I don’t like that programme.
PENNY: (Sad): Ok! Bye Tracy! Good night, Mrs Turnblad! Good bye, Mr. Turnblad!!!
WILBUR: Bye, ladies.. . take care!!
SCENE 2
“The Corny Collins Show is ending –final movements of the last musical
and the final pose-. Velma enters the plato saying..
VELMA: Ok, We`re out!!!!
CORNY: Velma!!, I’m glad you are here; I need to talk to you
VELMA: What’s going on? (Amber gets close to them to listen to this
chat)
CORNY: Hi AMBER, why don’t you go over there with LINK and the boys?
This is private!!!
AMBER: Corny, I’m the star here. You mustn`t speak to me that
way!!
VELMA. Sweety, your manners….
LINK. Come on, Amber! I want to talk to you, too
AMBER: uffff…. Ok, ok…. just because you ask me to, my handsome LINK
(The kids step aside, and the adults keep talking)
CORNY: Listen VELMA, we have to agree on the basis of Miss Hairspray´s
contest
VELMA: Yes …you are right… AMBER must win. That is the basis of
this contest
Corny: Wow wow wow, Well, of course, if she gets all the votes
needed…I’d like it to be fair, Velma… you know, I have to stand for my audience
and they are waiting for a clean and fair play on my programme…!
VELMA: Whatever, AMBER will win anyway!! She`s the best among all
the girls in this Show!. That is a fact..!
CORNY: Mmmm. May be that`s because we are on in a different shift from
the “Negro Day”… if “The Corny Collins´ show were integrated I wouldn`t be so
sure...if I were you…(sarcastically)
VELMA: Luckily that`s not a possibility and it will never be…. (smiling).
And that`s the reason why AMBER is definitely the winner of Mrs Hairspray`s
Contest… Am I being clear enough, my dear… or maybe it`s about time to think of
another host too!!
CORNY:May be, but THIS is the “Corny Collins´ Show”… and I`m Corny
and I lead THIS show. And while things stay this way, there will be some things
to be respected!! Or there´ ll be no more “Corny Collins…. Show”! How about
that Velma? (He passes by her).Bye, kids, see you tomorrow five sharp!
(On the other side of the plato)
LINK: Listen AMBER, I really like you, you are great but…
AMBER: But..????? There’s no “But”….!!
LINK: Well, Indeed there`s something!! I hope you could try to be nicer
to others. For example, can you see those boys and girls?
AMBER: Ahaa…
LINK: Well, They are trying to be part of the show, too!
AMBER: They can’t and they will never be.
LINK: Why not?
AMBER: Because I am THE star here and I`ve decided so....
LINK: What??? Why ?
AMBER: Because they are not like me, like you, like us…!!
FENDER: Like you? What do you mean LIKE you?
BRAD: Cruel, selfish.
AMBER: That´s not me!
FENDER AND BRAD: Yesss, you are!!!
BRAD: Do you like dancing?
AMBER: Of course. I love it
FENDER: We love dancing too.
BRAD: And we are as good as you are.
DOREEN and MAUREEN: we are twice as good as you are, hahahhahah!!!
AMBER: Haaa, come on!! ….How dare you compare yourself with me? I’m the
BEST ONE (girl) : And I heard Velma asking the cameraman just to zoom on
you and not the rest of the group…That`s not fair! We are a team!
VELMA: Daaaaarling! Don’t listen to them´.
(boy) : Sorry, VELMA, but you must consider us.
VELMA: Yes, of course…sweety..ok.ok…!!! We must go now. We have
important things to do.
FENDER: But WE are important, aren’t we?
PATTY: YES WE ARE ,
MATHEW : We can prove it on the show.
DOREEN and MAUREE : Yes, we will.
VELMA and AMBER : We’ll see.
LINK: What we should see is the “Negro Day” more often…! There are some
awesome dancers and singers on it! May be we can learn some new steps to use on
OUR Show…
AMBER: No kidding!Let me tell you that THEY are the ones to copy… They
are using our “The new girl in town”, didn`t you notice that?
LINK: Hey, that`s great, let`s go and see it, boys! They are great
dancing in pairs, it will be very useful for us…!
AMBER: (tired of Link`s attitude) Well… Useless trying to explain some
things….
LINK: I was thinking exactly the same… (boys leave the plato and “Negro
Day” starts). LINK and CORNY watch the monitor, PENNY and TRACY again on the TV
set, Tracy brings EDNA to show her that black people are getting new spaces on
TV.

(Girls run to school, and Edna keeps dancing in front of the TV set,
happily)
At SCHOOL
Miss MacEntire: The highest peak of the world is not the Everest… Who can tell me
which one it is?
Joe: Miss MacEntire! I can`t see the board again!!
Miss MacEntire: Miss Turnblad! Didn`t I tell you you shouldn`t come to school in such
a big hairstyle?
Tracy: Excuse me, Miss, but, aren`t girls supposed to be natty and
pretty? (Miss MacEntire stares at her visibly angry) …Or… hummmm
Miss MacEntire: As this is the third time I`m asking you to wear a proper hairstyle
and you don´t seem to have listened to my instructions, you`ll spend the
rest of the day in detention.
Tracy; Ok….. (she stands up slowly and goes to detention very upset)
SCENE 3
In detention
SEAWEED:Hey girls! Do you know that there will be new dancers at the
show? I`ve heard there`s going to be an audition soon…
BRENDA: Really, Who do you think that can be chosen?
BECKY: Only the beautiful girls…
INEZ: Ok, I’ll be there!! I can dance, sing, and I AM beautiful!!
SUZY: Yes…. Of course you are..!! jajajjaj (ironically)
MAYBELLE: Of course, she is!! But unluckily the audition is just
for the “Corny Collins´ Show”, not the “Negro Day”…
Tracy: Excuse, may I come in? I`m in detention, as all of you are, I
suppose!!
INEZ: Of course, come inside! We were talking about the audition on
Corny Collins Show, Have you heard anything about it?
Tracy; Yes, yesterday evening they announced it at the beginning of the
programme. My friend Penny is encouraging me to go and take my chance… Dancing
is my life!!
SEAWEED: I love it too!! We were practising some new steps...Do you want
me to show you some…?
Tracy: Of course! I`d love to….!!!!!
INEZ: I like singing.
MAYBELLE: She sings beautifully. Why don´t you listen to her?
SEAWEED: Even better, we can show you all the music we like,
dancing and singing it, and teaching our steps too if you like….
TRACY: Yes! Please!!! Let`s Do it.
“Run and Tell That” Track 09 (to edit -a little of Seaweed singing and
then since INEZ starts singing. only 30´-)
ALL THE GIRLS: (after seeing Tracy dancing) Wowwwww!!!!!!
(Link enters. He had been watching without being noticed)
SEAWEED: Hey girl, you ´ll surely be in if they see you at Corny
Collins´!!
LINK: I agree!!! It was amazing ! I´ll be singing for the first time at
the “Negro Day” as a guest singer and Corny is going to be there. I think it would
be a great chance for you to go!
TRACY: (looking at him completely in love) Do you really mean it?
(Somebody knocks at the door insistently)
(Seaweed opens the door and finds PENNY, and they stay still looking at
their eyes)
SUZY: Hey!!! Heeeeeeeey!!! (waking Penny and Seaweed up from their
“click together”). It`s break time! We are free now!!
(Tracy fetches Penny and she sings a little of “I can hear the Bells”
Track 05 –edition-)
SCENE 4: YOU CAN’T STOP THE BEAT -Part 1-
(There`ll be a sequence in music – LINK sings- when VELMA separates
TRACY from the group for being short and stout. Or just because she doesn´t
like her.
LINK looks angry and makes a sign to CORNY who approaches to the
plato-
VELMA does the same to INEZ and other girls.
TRACY looks disappointed but SEAWEED gets close to her and
encourages her to dance the steps he had taught her in detention.
CORNY comes and sees TRACY dancing and he immediately picks her up
from the group and takes her to the center of the plato. It was about
time to start the programme so TRACY debuts at that very moment. VELMA is
busy changing votes and looses the track of the sequence)
CAMERAMAN: Coming in 4,3,2 1, and show begins. Music.
CORNY; Let´s welcome our new member at Corny Collins´Show!! This awesome
girl really shakes it up!! Do you want to tell us something about you?
TRACY: Oh, well… I can say that I’m so happy to be here!!! , This show
is my life! It has showed me the way I want to go through in life! When I
grow up, I want to be the United States president ….and my greatest dream now
is a Corny Collins´mixed Show! There are some incredible singers and
dancers among black people… They may bring much talent to this show…!!
PENNY: (at Turnblad`s, watching the show)….You deserve it honey!!
EDNA: I can’t believe you are finally part of the show
WILBUR: Are you happy my darling?
EDNA, Seeing my daughter so happy makes the best day of my life!!!
(Welcome to the sixties´ sounds while Edna and Wilbur watch the TV
show)
Suddenly at Turnblad`s the telephone rings, they
get distracted from the show for a while)
WILBUR: Hello…!
MR. PINKY: Hello! I`d like to speak to Mrs
Turnblad`s agent, please!
WILBUR: (obstructing the mic with his hand). Edna!
Edna!! Somebody wants to speak to “Mrs Turnblad`s agent” !!!! (he laughs)
EDNA: (Whispering) Shhh!! Give it to me!!! Hello!
I`m Tracy Turnblad`s agent. Who`s speaking?
MR PINKY: Hello! I`m Mr Pinky, the owner of Pink
Ladies Fashion Store. We`re interested in Mrs Turnblad to be our new image this
season. We think it would be a great idea to have her working for us to include
all kind of women among our customers. We ve just seen her on TV and we think
she s adorable!
EDNA: Yes, indeed she is! Ok! Can we meet in an
hour time at your shop to discuss percentages and other conditions to close
this deal? (making herself serious and very professional. Wilbur goes back to
the TV set and looks astonished)
MR PINKY: Of course! We`ll be delighted to receive
you at our shop! See you then! (he makes a gesture of “winning”, she does the
same at the same time)
WILBUR: Edna, my love! Come and see what`s
happening at the show!!! Quickly!!
(Back to the Show)
LINK:I think TRACY refers to that group on the right! They were dancing
like crazy people!
BRAD: Yeah! we couldn´t even follow their steps!
(out of the plato) VELMA: What´s going on there?
PRODUCER: Shhhh!! Stay still, Velma. This Integration stuff has risen
the audience to triple!!
CORNY: Let´s see what you have! And let´s mix up to see how it
works!
LOU: Did he say “let`s mix up”??? This man must be out of his mind! Look
at Velma`s face! She`s about to faint! Hahahhaha!!!
RICHIE: Come on, guy! This is not time to gossip! It`s the first time we
have such an opportunity! Do not waste it in chattering and let`s run to the
plato right now!!!
RICKY: And let`s show them what we have, kids!!!
INEZ: We ARE rhythm and music! It is in our veins!!
(they all run to the plato and mix with white boys and girls)
EDNA: (watching) Oh!! I `m afraid my heart won`t stand so many emotions!
First Mr Pinky asking my little girl to be his model and now….
Black and white kids mixing on the show ?? My girl
danciong on TV?? I must be draming!!
WILBUR: No, my love! Not at all! Something`s
changing at last! Some people can finally see the world with our own eyes and
heart! (they hug ..)
(The bell rings. It`s Mrs Pingleton who appears to
tell them what is happening, from her own point of view)
Mrs PINGLETON: Oh my God! Have you seen what`s
happening on TV! This programme is going to take all Baltimore to hell! A
mixed group!!!!!
EDNA and WILBUR. (Happy): Yes!!! At last!! Hey!
Prudy! Isn`t that Penny over there?? (Penny is dancing with Seaweed obvously in
love, they laugh, Prudy shouts and faints!
(on the show again)
CORNY: This mixing has been a total success!!! Telephones don´t stop
ringing and everybody is enjoying this new mixed group!
But, now we are still due to select our Hairspray girl!!! (It´s
Hairspray track 15)
She has been voted by the audience after watching you dancing from the
beginning of the programme!!! Let´s ask AMBER to take the final vote.
(Amber reads the note, and when she has to say the name, she faints; she
immediately shouts:)
VELMA: “It´s impossible!!!!!
CORNY: Why do you say so?
EDNA: (coming in the TV Station) Because Mrs Blondie has been keeping
the OTHER votes in this little box hidden under Amber´s dresser. I saw her, so
I put them back where they belonged to! I think she must unwillingly have
forgotten to do it (ironically). (Everybody sees the scene astonished. Velma
shouts and goes out of the plato)
.
CORNY: Well!! Aha!! After this uncomfortable situation, let`s have
a look at the audience decision: The winner is………. INEZ!!!!
Everybody: Wow!!! Yes!!!! (applause and screaming and jumping)
(INEZ jumps, comes to the front to CORNYand everybody dance)
CORNY: Well!! After this uncomfortable situation we are now ready to
announce that the Corny Collins Show is officially integrated and our first
dancer is this pretty new talented beautiful young girl!!! Let´s try this new
shape before going to commercials!!!
(En V todos mezclados, INEZ at the front centre) You can´t stop the beat
Part 2 ( ending) . The musical ends, Audience clapping. The PRODUCER sends to
commercials saying "We are out" in the place of Velma, CORNY and
PRODUCER shake hands showing great joy for the high rated rating, and the group
share their feelings.
MAYBELLE: I’m so glad we are all together.
INEZ: Yes, we can share our love for music.
SEAWEED: and learn one from another.
AMBER: you can learn everything from me.
LINK: Ambeeerrr.. Haven’t you learnt anything?
BRENDA: I have.
SUZY: Me too.
BRAD: What have you learnt?
BECKY: That we ALL have the same rights to do what we like to.
CORNY: You are right. Where do you like to be?
TRACY and LINK: Here!!!!! Together!!
INEZ: And we also learned we are all the same. All human beings…No
colours!
LOU: With the same heart.
RICHIE: The same possibilities.
FENDER:Now I like to be here.
LINK: And, what are you going to do here?
VICKY: Do our best.
JENNY: And Enjoy ourselves!!!
DOREEN and MAUREEN: Twice as much as before!!!
ALL: Nobody will stop us!!!
TRACY: (sings and dances with Link, everybody join the final part of the
theme, VELMA is crying at a corner, and AMBER dancing and laughing with a black
boy of the group, Tracy and Link come from back stage together, take the front centre
and start the bow from the middle to the sides)
